Call To Action Montréal 2011

Mark your calendars - Apathy is Boring’s Call To Action Montréal 2011 will be held on Friday, February 11, 2011 at Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business. This event will bring together 200 unengaged youth & young leaders from a diversity of Montreal communities along with non-profit organizations, elected officials, and artists for a day of music and inter-generational dialogue.

Building on the success of Apathy is Boring’s Call to Action days in Montreal 2009, Edmonton 2009, and Halifax 2008, this event will inspire youth to take meaningful action in their communities and inform adults about how they can support these young people in taking action.

Call To Action Montréal 2011 will include workshops with local and national non-profit organizations -Canada World YouthEqual Voice Experiences ProgramInstitut du Nouveau MondeRights & DemocracySantropol RoulantÉtincelles médiaYWCAKatimavik, The Big Step-Le Grand Pas; hands on training with Apathy is Boring offering youth the tools they need to get involved; and a youth dialogue where youth will share their challenges, hopes, and Call To Action pledges.

Youth Dialogue presented in collaboration with the Michaëlle Jean Foundation and its co-founders the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean & Jean-Daniel Lafond.

Music will be featured throughout the day including performances by spoken word artist Moe Clark, Montreal DJ/producer Poirier, and Inuit throat singer Sylvia Cloutier.

Equal Voice’s Experiences Program has been traveling Canada to work with young women and foster their ambitions for elected office in student government and beyond. This hands-on workshop will cover the essentials of what you need for a successful political campaign in university politics!

Institut du Nouveau Monde - Solve social problems: become a social entrepreneur
In this workshop, we will discuss how individuals can tackle major social problems thanks to the creation of a social enterprise (Trocs tes trucs, SWAP team or Communauto as well as Apathy is boring itself are some examples) After discussion, we will move to action and make a giant creativity session to imagine new solutions to current social problems (education, aging, environment,..)! Let’s have fun while changing the world!

This workshop will explore of the past, present and future of comic books and how comic books can influence political issues, war, peace, social issues, prevention and more.

YWCA - Speaking out: Communication and Assertiveness
Using conscious communication as a base, the objective is to help participants develop their communication, listening, and observation skills that they can apply in personal, professional, public or group settings. The activities focus on assertive communication, conflict resolution and offer ways to deal with hostile behaviours.

‘I want to make a difference, but where do I start?’ Is a question we often hear from youth that Apathy is Boring’s staff and volunteers meet across the country.

This workshop will break it down step by step. Do you want to volunteer, vote, or just get involved in a cause you care about?

In this workshop Apathy is Boring will give you the tools you need to make a difference.

Being Youth Friendly: How to Engage Youth in Your Work

Don't know how to reach youth? We're here to help!

So you want to work with youth but don't know where to start? You know that cool is an important word but feel like the latest hip-hop trends are a bit out of your league? You want to make sure that the next generation takes up the mission of your organization and keeps it vibrant, but you know that the long boring meetings and 70s decor in your boardroom probably won't be the vibe young people are into. This presentation will give participants a guide to effectively engaging youth in their work including:
- How to reach unengaged youth.
- How to engage youth once they have showed up.
- How to integrate youth into decision-making structures.

Led by Ilona Dougherty
Passionate about fusing art and social change from an early age, Ilona’s diverse experiences range from being a Canadian delegate to the United Nations at 17 years old to producing concerts across Canada. A life long social entrepreneur, in January 2004 Ilona co-founded Apathy is Boring, a national non-partisan charitable organization that uses art and technology to educate Canadian youth about democracy. As Apathy is Boring’s Executive Director she has been featured by the national media, worked with rock stars, and given thousands of youth the tools they need to get involved in their communities. Raised by socially engaged parents in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and Whitehorse, Yukon, Ilona currently lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Apathy is Boring Call To Action Montreal 2011

L’Appel à l’action Montréal 2011

À vos calendriers - L’Appel à l’action Montréal 2011 aura lieu le vendredi 11 février à l’École de gestion John-Molson de l’Université Concordia. Cet événement rassemblera 200 jeunes non engagés et des jeunes meneurs de plusieurs communautés montréalaises, en plus de quelques organismes à but non lucratif, des députés et des artistes pour une journée de musique et de dialogue inter-générationnel.

Cette journée s’inscrit à la suite des succès qu’ont connus les Appels à l’action de Montréal 2009, d’Edmonton 2009 et d’Halifax 2008 et vise à encourager les jeunes à poser des gestes concrets, à s’impliquer dans leurs communautés et à informer les adultes sur les moyens dont ils disposent pour les encourager dans cette démarche visant à les inciter à s’impliquer.

L’Appel à l’action Montréal 2011 est composé d’ateliers avec des organismes à but non lucratif locaux et nationaux - Jeunesse Canada Monde, À voix égales - Expériences, l’Institut du Nouveau Monde, le Réseau étudiant Droits & Démocratie,Santropol Roulant, Étincelles média, YWCA, Katimavik, The Big Step-Le Grand Pas; de formation participative avec L’apathie c’est plate qui fournit aux jeunes les outils dont ils ont besoin pour s’impliquer; et d’un dialogue jeunesse où les jeunes seront invités à partager avec leurs communautés leurs défis, leurs espoirs et leurs résolutions d’Appel à l’action.

YWCA - Speaking out: Communication and Assertiveness
L’objectif est de développer les compétences en communication des participantes, ainsi que leurs capacités d’écoute et d’observation, afin qu’elles puissent s’affirmer dans les milieux personnels, professionnels, publiques ou au sein d’un groupe. Les activités aborderont l’importance de mettre ses forces en valeur afin de pouvoir communiquer de façon adaptée en respectant la personne en face. Les activités offertes traitent notamment de la résolution des conflits et forment les jeunes femmes à faire face à des comportements hostiles.
